Bonanza was an American western/cowboy television series which aired on the NBC television network from September 12, 1959 until January 16, 1973. The pilot episode was written by David Dortort, who also produced the series. He had previously produced The Restless Gun and later produced The High Chaparral and The Cowboys, based on the feature film of the same name. Bonanza was the first hour-long network television series filmed in color. For most of its run, the main sponsor of Bonanza was Chevrolet and the stars occasionally appeared in commercials endorsing Chevrolet automobiles. All of the regular cast members had appeared in numerous stage, television and film productions before Bonanza, but none were particularly well-known.

From 1961 to 1972 Bonanza aired on Sunday nights at 9:00 PM throughout most of the United States. This time slot was crucial to the success of the show: from 1964 through 1967, the show was #1 in the yearly Nielsen ratings. In terms of longevity, the show remains NBC's second longest-running series, after Law & Order.

Bonanza DVD show box set complete TV series and seasons on DVDs

The show Bonanza was an all time favorite TV. It aired from 1959 to 1973. It was one of the most famous shows aired on NBC. The only other, more popular western show was Gunsmoke.

There were many famous actors in this show, like David Canary, Michael Landon, Lorne Green, Dan Blocker and Pernell Roberts. The show was set in the Lake Tahoe area of Nevada. It was about the daily happenings of Cartwright family.

Loren Greene played the role of the elder Cartwright, Ben. He had three boys from three different wives. Well, we see that Ben was widowed 3 times. The son’s roles were played by: Pernell Roberts (Adam). Dan Blocker played the role of Eric. The role of Joseph was played by Michael Landon. He was known as the “little Joe” in the show. With all these characters it was considered as a typical western show at that time. All these three sons had a different personality. Eric was like a giant teddy bear, Joe was such a little hellion, and Adam was the oldest son of his father more like a father. All the people cared for each other. They were all like a family even with a lot of characters.

There was a chef in the house. He was Hop Sing, his role was played by Victor Sen Yung. The story is about the family and all the important things they did, it is more about the family values and community and things they shared living in that community.

The ranch was called The Ponderosa. It was very large and covered a lot of acres of land. They named the ranch “The Ponderosa” after the Ponderosa Pine tree. This tree is popular in that area.

The min town in the show was called Virginia City. We see that often the family goes there for supplies. They also went there to meet with Sherriff and Deputy who was played by Ray Team and Bing Russell.

The show became popular as time passed. The producers showcased the Cartwright characters in other specific shows. This made it easy for the directors and the writers to create even more fuller character.
